What is a Phrasal Verb?

Phrasal verbs are different than common verbs.Phrasal verbs can be made by a combination of Verb+Preposition or Verb+Adverb or Verb+Adverb+Preposition. Phrasal verbs meanings are quite different from its original verbs.Phrasal verbs make us to learn English difficult.

Let me give some examples.

Look After

Look after means take care of something.

We need to look after our parents when they getting older.

Answer for

Means be responsible for

Do you think parents are answer for their children's behavior.

Cut down
To reduce something in amount

I need to cut down amount of Sugar I eat

Come across
To meet some one or something unexpectedly

I came across my school friend at Dilsukhnagar


Act upon/on
To do something definite about; Act according to

Acting on information from a member of the public.the police raided the club

Why don't you act on her suggestion
Ask for
Ask to see or Speak to someone or To behave in a that is likely to bring something unpleasant

Letting the children play with street dogs way just asking for the trouble.

Ask after
Seek information about,in a sympathetic way(Especially about health).

Honey always asks after you in her mails.

Become of
To happen

What will become of him,if he is sent to the prison?

Blast off
To take off with the power of jets or rockets
The satellite was ready for blast off at 6.P.M. yesterday

Break out
Appear or happen suddenly
The 2nd world war broke out in 1939
Fire will be break out.

Break up

End,come to an end
Now-a-days many relation-ships break up without any reasons.

Bring about
Cause

Science has brought about fundamental thinking.

Publish,produce

He brings out 2 new books every month

Call for
Require,demand,to need something
The situation calls for prompt action

Call on/upon
Make a short visit to;Invite to do something
You can call on the dean tomorrow

Call off
Cancel
The Principal decided to call off the meeting.

Call up
To telephone

Why don't to call me up at home.

Bail out
Pay money as a surety.
Jagan was bailed out

We have many number of phrasal verbs in English I have explained some of them.
Although some people hesitate to learn phrasal verbs, I like to learn them.
