Polite Speech in English

  • English does not have two kinds of verbs from the point of view of "Respect".
  • English does not have two pronoun forms from the point of "Respect".
  • English does not have Special words for elder brother and his wife,Older Cousin and her Husband, For another man from mother's village etc.

  • English has "Sir","Madam","Miss","Mister",etc.
  • English has "Sorry","Please" and "Thanks".
  • Hearts lie,like door,will open with ease/you please.

When do You Say "Please!"

  • A more Polite request- Can I have a cup of tea,Please!     Silence,Please!     May I have Your attention, Please!
  • To add force to a demand- Shall we all,Please,Come on Time tomorrow?
  • To Draw Somebody's attention-One to Parry's,Please! without sugar ,Please!
  • In place of  "Sir/Madam/Mister",etc- You May take this Seat,Please!

When Do you Say "Sorry"

  • To apologies-Sorry,I am late, I wrote it wrongly.
  • To Decline an offer- Sorry, I Can not accept it!
  • To Deny Permission- Sorry, It is closed now!
  • To Express Disagreement- Sorry,I don't agree! Sorry, I beg to differ.
  • Before interruption - Sorry, We must take only about the item on the Agenda!

English Uses Question form for Request,Advice,Suggestion,Offers,etc.

  • Can I borrow your Pen, Please!
  • Can you tell me the time,Please!
  • May I come in sir.
  • Would you like to try this new Shirt,Please!
  • Will you,Madam,Marry Me?
  • Shall we go to the town this Evening?
  • Would you like to try this new recipe,Miss?

Indicators for Impoliteness:

  • Being late for appointments.
  • Speaking Rapidly.
  • Listening without looking at the Speaker.
  • Interrupting the Speaker/pre-Emptying the speaker - I know what you mean!
  • Inadequate attention to the Speaker.
  • Using pronoun without the Noun first.
  • Using informal Language in a formal Situation.
